Ecuador the Galapagos – Smelly Iguanas

MARINE IGUANAS

Marine iguanas are certainly among the most unusual creatures. When they are diving they can they can travel up to 5 km an hour. They have curved pointed toes and sharp nails to grip onto the rock, when they are mating they transport from black to green and red. If they’re males they can grow up to 5 feet which is a limit and they can lie on the bottom of the ocean looking for food. They only eat green and red  algae, they have got serrated teeth so can eat from different angles. Their poo stinks I know, because I have to step over it every time I go to my bedroom.

During the mating season, the male blue footed boobie are showing off, more dramatic than normal, by showing off their sky blue feet.

THE GREEN TURTLE

In Hawaii the word means sea turtles and represents long life.  Aged 80 is middle aged for a Galapagos turtle. The Green Turtle weighs more than 5 times more than my dad’s weight. Apart from climbing out of their nest into the sea, they stay on the sea for their entire lives, but only the female comes from the sea to lay their eggs, and never come back to see them again. When the turtles are resting they hold their breath for two and half hours and they can grow up to one and half metres high! They swim at 35 miles an hour which is as fast as the boat we went on.

The Frigate Bird

The frigate bird is a very light  bird for its’ wing span, which means it’s very good at flying. With it’s funky movements it shakes other birds to make them sick and then get the food from the sick. The Frigate bird is not very good at walking but it is amazing at flying. When they eat they blow up their big red balloon, until a female comes and sits next to him. He will then put his big wings around her to protect her. The Frigate bird does not  cover its wings in oil to water proof their wings, so that they cannot dive to catch their fish, they can only use acrobatic moves to catch flying fish. If they get wet they will drown.
